My daughter wants to loc her hair
Aug 20th 2021
I always said if I loc my daughter’s hair, it would be at her request because I understand it’s not just a temporary protective style you can easily unravel. Well I didn’t realize today would be that day at 4 years old she’d look at me and say “mommy I want to loc my hair like yours.” It’s an honor and goes to show that we lead and set the example for our daughters at a very early age that loving your natural self IS beautiful, especially when every where she turns society is telling her the opposite.
She sees me everyday literally running a whole loc business and starting hundreds of loc journies so it makes sense that she’d ask me to start hers lol. I told her to give it some more thought lol but it’s really me who needs to give it thought. I love loc’d kids. I’m just loving living vicariously through her because I went straight from relaxer to locs. I didn’t embrace my natural loose hair.
So I’ve grown to love playing with her natural hair over the years. To her, she says it’s too long for her liking and she wants it “out of the way.” Which totally goes against beauty standards that say long hair is desirable. She’s teaching me a lot just by listening to her communicate her wants that have nothing to do with peer pressure, media or outsider’s influence. She has a mind of her own and I respect it because I want to raise a future leader who’s confident in herself.
