Small vs Medium vs Large Loc Extensions: Which Size Is Right for You?

Choosing the right loc size is one of the most important decisions of your loc journey. Go too small and you're committing to hundreds of locs and intensive maintenance. Go too large and the look may not match your face shape or lifestyle. After 20+ years of helping clients find their perfect loc size, here's how I break it down.

Understanding Loc Sizes

Loc extension sizes are measured by diameter — how wide each individual loc is. At Macon Styles, we offer seven sizes:

  • Micro XXS — 0.25cm: Ultra-fine sisterloc style. Maximum density, most feminine and delicate look. Ideal for clients who want locs that closely mimic natural sisterlocks.
  • XSmall — 0.5cm: Fine and airy. Natural-looking with good density. A great entry-level small size.
  • Small — 0.6cm: Our most popular size. Versatile, natural, and works beautifully on almost all face shapes.
  • Smedium — 1cm: The sweet spot. Full enough to feel substantial but refined enough to look elegant. Perfect for clients who want that classic loc look.
  • Medium — 1.5cm: Bold and defined. Noticeable locs with beautiful texture and great presence.
  • Large — 2cm: Chunky and full of personality. Lower maintenance between appointments.
  • XXL — 3cm+: Statement wicks. Dramatic, thick, and completely unapologetic. Very low loc count, very high impact.

Which Size Suits Your Face Shape?

Face shape matters more than most people realize. Here's a quick guide:

  • Oval face: Lucky you — almost any loc size works. We recommend small to smedium for the most balanced look.
  • Round face: Smaller to medium locs elongate the face. Avoid very thick locs which can add width.
  • Square face: Medium to large locs soften a strong jawline beautifully.
  • Heart face: Smedium to medium is the sweet spot — adds fullness at the jaw to balance a wider forehead.
  • Oblong face: Larger, fuller locs add width and balance a longer face.

Lifestyle Matters Too

Your daily life should influence your loc size choice. If you work out daily, swim frequently, or have a very active lifestyle, larger locs are more forgiving between maintenance appointments. Smaller locs require more frequent retightening, especially in the early stages.

What About Maintenance?

The smaller the loc, the more maintenance it requires. Micro XXS sisterloc-style locs need retightening every 4 to 8 weeks. Large wicks can go much longer between appointments. Be honest with yourself about how much time and budget you can commit to maintenance before choosing your size.
