How Many Loc Extensions Do I Need? A Complete Guide by Size

One of the most common questions we get at Macon Styles is: how many loc extensions do I need for a full head? The answer depends on four key factors — your loc size, hair density, head size, and coverage area. Here's everything you need to know before you order.

Loc Count by Size

Every loc size has a different count range because smaller locs require more individual pieces to cover the same amount of scalp. Here's a general guide based on 20+ years of loctician expertise:

  • Micro XS (0.25cm) — 140 to 400 locs for a full head. This is the sisterloc range and the most labor-intensive install.
  • Small (0.5cm) — 80 to 100 locs, or 8 to 10 bundles.
  • Smedium (0.6cm) — 70 to 90 locs, or 7 to 9 bundles.
  • Medium (1cm) — 50 to 70 locs, or 5 to 7 bundles.
  • Wick Large (2cm) — 40 to 60 locs, or 4 to 6 bundles.
  • Wick XL (3cm) — 30 to 50 locs, or 3 to 5 bundles.
  • Wick XXL (4cm) — 5 to 15 locs for a full head.

At Macon Styles, 1 bundle = 10 locs. So if you need 60 medium locs, you'd order 6 bundles.

How Hair Density Affects Your Count

Hair density is one of the biggest variables in your loc count. If you have high density hair — meaning your scalp is barely visible even when parted — you'll need more locs to match your natural fullness. Low density hair will require fewer. As a rule of thumb, add 10 to 20 locs to your base count if you have high density hair.

4c Hair and Loc Extensions

If you have 4c hair texture, your natural hair is tightly coiled and often appears denser than it is. This means your locs need to be parted more carefully to avoid tension on the scalp. For 4c hair with high density, lean toward the higher end of the count range for your chosen size.

What About Partial Installs?

Not everyone wants a full head of locs. If you're doing a high top, fade, or mohawk style, you can subtract 30 to 50 locs from the full head count since only your top section is being installed. Partial installs are a great way to try loc extensions before committing to a full set.

Tips from The Loc Doctress

After 20+ years of crafting loc extensions, my biggest piece of advice is this: when in doubt, order more. It's always better to have a few extra locs for touch-ups, repairs, or future additions than to run short mid-install. Leftover locs from the same batch will match your color and texture perfectly.
